It was more than luck that brought me to work with the Li'l Bit of Luck ad teams this week for the latest NY Lotto commercial (unless we mean Luck = Preparation meets timing, in which case, that's it!). Regardless of how I got there, I am grateful for the super fun opportunity to work with great kids (yes, kids!) and fantastic actor Bhavesh Patel, who played my co-worker at the NY1 offices.

I found a photo of some of the amazing Little Bit of Luck masks that are being used, and also an article about when the NY Lotto mascot first began appearing on television.

Done with Spanish Public Supermarkets callback and now off to catch the always and ever entertaining Losers Lounge at Joe's Pub this weekend. SteelyDoobie, baby.

Home for the holidays

While I didn't partake in the Black Friday shopping frenzy this week, I did work on a couple of consumer vehicles that will hit the small screen soon. One is a sweet spot for Ikea and the other was for Helzberg. Ikea was shot at my local studio, SilverCup. While I was the "wife" for the Spanish version, the English ("general market") mom was the beautiful Roslyn Ruff, who is on CBS' A Gifted Man -- which also happens to shoot in the same studio.

At one point, a few of the actors and I ran into the terrific Margo Martindale from A Gifted Man in the hall, and the guy who was my husband in the spot -- the very funny Victor Cruz -- stopped her to genuinely congratulate her on her Emmy. (I was too star-struck to say I loved her interview on Terry Gross - and besides, she's probably heard it a million times, right?)

The Ikea spot will start airing after the holidays.

The other session I did was voiceover for Helzberg Diamonds radio. The national on-camera commercial, starring me and my real-life hubs Seth B, is flashing across cable TV channels as we speak.

Other ad campaigns still airing include my SoBe radio commercial in English, Spanish and French (I've never actually heard the finished product) and one for the Ad Council which I mentioned in an earlier post (I have one line from the :28 to :32 second mark!)

So November was filled with lots of callbacks, and watching a lot of lucky girls get some fun parts. And of course, still in acting classes after over a decade of training. It seems honing the craft never ends. And support from friends and family cannot be underestimated. The thanks-giving continues, way beyond the holidays!

The national premiere of Women War & Peace's Afro-Colombian episode airs tonight on PBS (Channel 13 here in NYC). I did voiceover dubbing for one of the women.

Here we are, the first blistery day of November, and we recorded this sessions (way on the west side, near Alvin Ailey) on a super hot day last July.

It's an excellent series, featuring voiceovers from actors like Matt Damon and Tilda Swinton, with incredible stories about real women around the world.

Now that JLo and Marc Anthony are getting lots of attention for their split, Central Park is showing their collaboration EL CANTANTE this Tuesday August 23rd. I rented it recently, knowing I had worked on one of the scenes one freezing cold day back in like 2005, at Webster Hall on 11th Street. Suddenly there was my li'l face, taking up the screen in Scene 5. It's cute. The director had originally asked me to play "Hector's friend Eddie's girlfriend" but changed his mind at the last minute. So there I am, swaying to the beat, for a total of 5 seconds. If you happen to be checking out the movie, that's me in the big headband!

Got a sweet little IMDB page going on, but deciding whether the $54 they charge is worth it just to have a picture up all year. If I was actually famous, there'd be photos from events by other people, like on Will Carlough's page, that I wouldn't have to pay for. The plus of having a photo up is that at least you know which Susan Stewart you're checking out...!

In other news, it seems my li'l website went from #1 Google rank a few years ago, to #3, to page two last year, to way past page four so now I'm-not-even-going-to-bother-looking-for-it. I realize it's the social networking sites pushing it way out of the way, but perhaps a few clicks from friends might help? Finally, I'm not a published author (yet?) so I don't check out my Amazon rank every few minutes after my book's come out. But maybe that'll happen one day. Before that, I hope I've mastered spiritual meditation to make none of this matter at all. Until then, workin it, the craft, the readings, the works.

Six months worth -- a brief update!

-Life in Flight is now on DVD -- available from Netflix!

-Lovely Daily News piece about crossing the Brooklyn Bridge post New Year's

-Booked a national radio spot for the Ad Council -- I'm a teacher, en español. Glad my Masters in Teaching has come in handy.

-While SAG represents me as Susan Stewart, there was already a Susan Stewart in AFTRA. So my AFTRA name is Susie Stewart Rubio. (Hoping to land a Dora the Explorer role in my lifetime... I like imagining Susie Stewart Rubio in the credits.)

-National cable spot for Helzberg Diamonds. They also made an internet spot and radio commercial. While we never say anything about diamonds or chocolates, somehow it makes you think of them. Airing at least through Valentine's Day.

-Recorded eight Pampers demos at Saatchi and Saatchi. Copy writer Matt Gellert = super talented.

-Got to visit Chelsea Piers again recently for L&O audition -- it's like visiting a little island off the island.

It's going to be a bittersweet Friday for me this weekend. Tomorrow as I remember my grandmother "La Madre" at services for her passing, I will also be heard on TV in a commercial dedicated to mothers.

This Friday night on NBC-TV, my voice will air during the Jensen Project in a new 60-second Pampers spot.

Sundance Channel airing LIFE IN FLIGHT Saturday

The film that got me hooked on Wellies and skinny jeans is finally on TV this weekend. LIFE IN FLIGHT makes its cable TV premiere this Saturday December 19th on the Sundance Channel (7:40PM start). The amazing Kitty Boots gave me these adorable "working outdoors" outfits, most of which get cut off at the waist in the movie. But that's ok. LIFE IN FLIGHT is about an architect (Will) who has to choose between selling out or following his dreams in NYC. I'm just the secretary (Meg). But check out the scene where Will's late for a meeting - Meg's had it with his shenanigans!

Cable Architects: Life in Flight on TV until this weekend

LIFE IN FLIGHT which screened at Tribeca Film Festival is now available On Demand on Time Warner Cable and Cox at the IFC in Theatres prompt! It has been available for a couple of months now and is now only on until August 4th.

I play Meg, assistant to Will Sargent played by Patrick Wilson (Little Children). Other amazing actors in the film include David Ilku (Unitard), Rashida Jones (The Office), Monique Curnen (Batman) and Fred Weller (The Shape of Things).

We shot it in NYC, in spots like Greenpoint and L.I.C., and it's directed by NY's Tracey Hecht. It's produced by Plum Pictures (The Baxter).

Check out this sweet love story about an architect who is torn between selling out and living the creative life he wants. And let me know what you think!

Welcome Spring with a dose of CUPID! I really appreciate this new ABC show...I think it's a lovely tribute to my favorite city in the world, NEW YORK CITY, and Bobby Cannavale & Sarah Paulson are fun to watch together. Plus the first two episodes have made me cry. They're about love!

The third episode, "The Great Right Hope" airs this Tuesday 4/14 at 10pm Eastern on ABC-TV. I play a left-wing producer for public television...

Aside from yours truly, other interesting actors in this episode are Anna Chlumsky (My Girl), Lee Tergesen (Oz), and Kari Swenson Riely & David Lavine from "Life in Flight" (the film I shot with Patrick Wilson).

I have an awesome political line in the new Rob Thomas show CUPID ... I can't tell you what it is because I signed a non-disclosure agreement ... but I can say that this adorable show has been shooting in Queens at a great studio near Hell Gate Bridge. CUPID stars bilingual actor Bobby Cannavale who is so amazing in The Station Agent that I was giddy when I found out I got the role of "Skyler" on the ABC show.

The whole time I was there I had "Heart of Mine" by Lucky Ghost stuck in my head ... If ever I meet Cupid...

The first one features Andre Rodriguez, who also happened to be in the Queens Theatre in the Park production of Anna in the Tropics I did a while back. It was so awesome to work with him again.

For the second commercial I got to work with two amazing kids. The fighting you see on the couch lasted for hours, as we did takes from different angles. Their energy was limitless.

For several takes the director asked me to say anything I wanted (instead of the translation of "Someone has to go to their room"), so I said "Los voy a mandar a la porra" -- it's something a lot of Latin American parents say when you're in trouble. One of the production guys laughed so hard and called his dad to ask what it was. Apparently it's like the equivalent of sending you to "Siberia"...

Played a "Rachael Ray" type at auditions recently - had a callback for an Arm & Hammer internet commercial. We all know I'm already pretty perky and bubbly - and to be asked to raise it a few notches? It was like Susan Stewart on five cups of coffee (or chai or thai iced tea). When I finally met the clients, they did ask for it to be toned down again, and were glad the adjustment was seamless.

Now that I am studying Astronomy, I understand how an x-ray works. Basically X rays are ultraviolet rays, meaning they are rays of light that register below "violet" on the ROYGBIV spectrum, and they are of shorter wavelenghts, than say, infrared rays. We can't really see X rays, so when you look at a doctor's "x-ray" it's actually just a print of whatever the X rays couldn't pass through - like your bones. The reason X-rays can be dangerous is that they can penetrate body tissue and cause cell damage.

Which leads me to the fine film I worked on with Matt Kohn, ROSA X-RAYS JOE, which has not caused cell damage thus far. I played Rosa, the x-rayer. ROSA X-RAYS JOE also features The Gershwin's Michael Weiner, Time Out NY's David Cote, and PS 122's Careligh Welsh. Today and tomorrow, clips from the film will be featured on CUNY-TV and NYC-TV, a fabulous New York channel that runs a variety of arts programming.

Why will it be on CUNY/NYC-TV? Because Matt Kohn, director also of documentaries Call it Democracy and Freedom Isn't Free, is being interviewed on the show ART or something like it! Tonight's episode is called "Governmental Comic Books or Experience Sneakas".

It airs at 10:30pm Friday night (1/12), and on Saturday (1/13) at 2:30pm. It will also repeat on Friday 1/27 and will eventually be available on the web at www.artorsomethinglikeit.com.

So I hope you'll check it out, set the DVR, etc.

And wear sunscreen.

Working on that indie feature was an exorbitant amount of fun. It's called Life in Flight by the way, and if you google "Life in Flight Patrick Wilson" dozens of stories will come up.

I've got to get to xmas shopping and all the other catching up, but in the meantime, I found this photo* online of one of the location shoots. The landscape is pretty barren but for a xmas tree, which I believe was made by our costume dept (for festivity's sake).

Just got cast in an independent feature. I'm playing the assistant manager on a construction site...I love having lots of different jobs that I never really trained for (but hey I've been training to be an actor forever)...I wonder if I'll get to wear a hard hat. I'm excited about the endeavor...more details to come.

Toasting & Lauding Secrets of Six-Figure Women Author

Had the honor of being at the Count Me In gala event last week at Gotham Hall. Seated at my table was the ever-vivacious and dynamic Barbara Stanny, and her mother Annette, wife of Richard Bloch (of H&R Block). (I was Barbara's guest.)

I also had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful couple, Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page, authors of Becoming a Chef and other books. The gift bag that night was so fun - Mally lipstick, an RLM Studio bracelet, L'Occitane savon... "Quitters" haven't quit yet

Time to start watching novellas on Telemundo (and Univision) again - that is, if you want to catch my "Quitters" campaign PSA. The Dept of Health commercial in Spanish is back, where I walk down the street with my "sister" and my "dad", admiring his ability to kick the smokin' habit.

I actually have yet to see the spot myself, so if anyone happens to record it, please let me know. It should air for the next 13 weeks...

A callback for Mastercard had me zipping through the city like a fugitive the other day. It was last minute, as many of these auditions often are, and I was in the middle of a shoot. I had to sneak off, hail a cab, race downtown, act overjoyed for the camera, and hop back on the train. I got back to set in time for no one to notice my disappearance. (Whew!) I did have a friend on the inside who sent me txt msg updates of what was going on. I owe him a drink for sure.

I also had a VO audition for McDonald's. Getting there was also an ordeal, because I had my car, had to park it, leave a note on my car for D.O.T. not to ticket me, catch a train, etc.

Besides realizing the necessity of a jet pack, I'm ready to fine-tune my Spanish VO skills. If you know of a good coach for voiceover work in Spanish, pls email me: susanstewartnycATaolDOTcom. Thanks!

waiting rooms don't gotta be cutthroat

Sometimes auditioning on Saturday morning really sucks - but not this time! I had a callback for Verizon and ran into all these lovelies! One was the marvellous Adrian Martinez, who stars in Mail Order Wife. We had dinner one night with Maria Cabezas after a SAG event. He often plays "the intern" on Conan and also screams "Money!" in a commercial I see a lot (what's it's for I couldn't tell you - doesn't that happen a lot?) It was great to see him again, and to see an adorable pic of his new baby.

I also ran into the awesome Jorge Cordova (you can call him Hor-heh or George, depending on your mood, or his). He and I were in a Cofounder show together a few summers ago. (Another amazing person who was in that production was Paul Schnee, who went on to become a casting director and incidentally, cast me in "Guerilla"!)

And the final name dropping of the day (meaning Saturday), is that I saw my old buddy Alton Fitzgerald from my Tylenol commercial. I'd seen him once since we'd shot the spot, when he sang at Unity a couple of Easters ago. He is mega-talented and is currently in The Lion King on Broadway.

So yeah, I had a callback, but I also got to catch up with some fabulous peeps.

The day before I was at a voiceover casting and it was a similar day of actor-bonding, this time with the Latin girls of NYC. I got to see Monica Yudovich (who wrote the fun play Sisters that we read at Repertorio Espanol), as well as Vanessa Aspillaga from the original Anna in the Tropics (we both played Marela).

I can't say the same for my RENT audition this morning - I didn't know anyone in the waiting room, and was mainly surrounded by excited pixies from LA. One of them said, "That look says it all."

I was like, "Huh?"

She's like, "That look -- says it all!"

I was like, "I don't know what you're talking about."

And she gave me a coy smile.

Hmmm. Maybe one day I'll get to know her... Until then, I got a lot of other tremendous, down-to-earth actors to look forward to running into!

Exciting news: Just got back from my fitting for the new film "Guerilla". I am playing "Protester #2", and will be directed by Steven Soderbergh! Benicio Del Toro has the role of Che Guevara and I will be an anti-communist Cuban refugee "greeting" him as he arrives in NY. The film will be in production for a couple of years because the script is still being worked on. We just have to get the UN shots done before renovations take place...

socializing in Hitch

If you happen to rent Hitch (with Will Smith) you can see me in the bar scene, by the entrance to the main room. My hair is down and I'm chatting away with two other girls.

Next year, when the new J. Lo and Marc Anthony movie El Cantante comes out, you'll be able to see me moving to the beat in huge pink earrings and a tube top.

Fun times in cinema.

You may remember the cashier from Barbara Colio's La Habitacion at The Red Room two summers ago - remember my character, her boss, let her get strangled by a mad coffee addict and web surfer? Anyway, that little cashier, the darling Monica Yudovich, has written a play called Hermanas which is a finalist in MetLife Foundation's Nuestras Voces Playwrighting Competition. The first reading goes up Wednesday November 16th at 6:30pm at REPERTORIO ESPANOL.* It is directed by Kevin Del Aguila, who also wrote the off-Broadway hit Altar Boyz. Oh, and of course, I have a lovely part in the piece. I play Gabriella, the woman all the girls love to hate.

The Make-Out Twins, Floating

SALTWATER, a film by Casimir Nozkowski, a director I've worked with often (as you may have gathered), is screening this Saturday on a boat in Brooklyn. I have the bittiest part, as the Make-Out Twins, stars of their own TV show. You never actually see my face, but rather two versions of my back, making out with myself. If that doesn't make sense, see the movie so you can understand.

Oh Sumoh what a sweet star you are

The name Sumoh comes from a time in my life when I was studying Japanese and someone in the corridors of my high school decided a great name for a girl named Sue would be Sumo. It stuck and I decided at 16 that one day Sumoh would be my rockstar name.

Well I came close enough to that this past Wednesday night as the TONIGHT SHOW featured clips from the great cryingwhileeating.com! Dan and Cas discussed the videos and their project (30 millions hits, yo!). Dan even told Jay Leno that I do cry about Brad & Jennifer. (Perhaps I'm just crying about all of it, the media frenzy, the photos, the fact that she went to high school with many of my friends.)

Anyway, as Saul from THE FUTURE says, "I for one am very excited."

People often ask me if I get "free things" from the companies I do commercials for. That would be really neat, but the answer is no. No free Tylenol, no free Verizon airtime, no free health insurance.

The other day I was walking in midtown and wanted to walk through the open courtyard of the new Bloomberg building. After all, I did the voiceover for it. A security guard standing by said, "Do you live here?"

"No..."

"Sorry, no walk-throughs."

And that was that.

Thanks for all your good vibes and thoughts! I did book the Verizon Wireless job and was a principal in the spot called "Bride to Be". We shot all day Saturday. Arrival time at the 15-passenger van was at 3am, after the fun Marc Jacobs fitting on Friday. So I had two productions of Anna in the Tropics and a 13 hour day on set on 45 minutes of sleep. They should teach this stuff in acting school.

All in all it was a blast. Look out for my brunette self geting a txt-msg in a bridal shop!

Just got the call. They released the "hold" for this morning.

The best words to hear after a callback are, "You got it" or "You booked it." Then there's "They loved you." And finally there's "You're released," which despite how disappointing it is, it literally releases me from the anxiety and anticipation of waiting. It's watching someone else win the raffle prize, a prize you wouldn't have even known about if you hadn't gone to the party.

At least there's still ANNA IN THE TROPICS*. Lots of cigars. Runs May 13 to May 22.

This is not the first time I've hoped to encounter the famous Wendy. As a five year old I was thrilled to visit the Wendy's in Sunnyside because the redhead was scheduled to appear.

Well now I am up for a Wendy's radio spot, so the chance to rub elbows with the elusive "daughter" of the restaurant's founder is here again. OK, yes I'm up for the commercial, but Wendy herself is actually not involved at all.

So say some prayers for me, because you like to do good deeds. I'm supposed to find out within the next ten hours (by Thursday morning).

There's a slight chance I may appear in the pilot of Jonny Zero this Friday evening, 9pm EST on Fox (Channel 5 here in NY). I worked in the goth club scene, sipping real beer, directed by Mimi Leder. Another actor who you surely catch in it is the fabulous Rock Kohli (www.cofounder.org/august.html). He is also on Third Watch same night/same time. (Rock should hire me as his publicist ;) Anyway watch Jonny Zero so you can get into the groove of the series.

I'm also on Episode 8 (as a Latin gang member) and Rock appears again in another episode as well.
